Memory Lane

Come and take a walk with me, down Memory Lane, to the time of Hernando County's yesteryears.

Our visit to the past will include photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, mementos of our ancestors, and the memories and stories of our older citizens. So just sit back, relax and let your mind wander; try and visualize the Hernando County of the past.

A time when Hernando County reached as far north as the existing Levy/Citrus County line and as far south as the existing Pasco/Hillsbourough County line. A time when there were no automobiles, malls, super centers or even the modern conveniences that we take for granted. A time when horses and buggys would be "parked" in front of the Courthouse, the General Store, Butcher Shop, Blacksmith and Livery, and the Mercantile; at dusk the street lamp lighter would make his rounds lighting the gas lamps to illuminate our fair town. The beauty of autumn, when the hills surrounding Brooksville were tinted with the golden hues of ripening citrus fruit.

A time of picnics in the countryside, Sunday Church Socials, where you bought your sweeties "Box Lunch" at an auction and then sat down to eat it with her. Children laughing and playing outside from dawn to dusk. A time when often you would find two and sometinmes three generations all living in the same household.

I hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane with me s much as I have enjoyed creating the illusion of the past.

**Just a note, for a period of time Hernando was known as Benton County. You will find many things on this site that today are in Citrus or Pasco Counties. The reason for this is; prior to 1887, Hernando County encompassed all of Citrus and Pasco counties.**
